Where 10 LPA sits
10 LPA puts you well inside India's organised-sector upper band and comfortably above the national median, though it is a normal rather than exceptional figure in the metro technology market. It is the level at which most people stop worrying about covering the month and start thinking seriously about saving rates, and it is a very common landing point two to four years into a career in engineering, finance or consulting.
It is also a level where the structure of the offer starts to matter as much as its size. At 10 LPA the difference between a package with a high basic and one loaded with special allowance is several thousand rupees a month in provident fund alone, and that gap compounds for a decade before you notice it.
What 10 LPA becomes in hand
The headline is CTC, not salary. Strip out the employer's provident fund contribution and the gratuity accrual โ both inside the CTC figure, neither reaching your account โ and you have gross pay. Take your own 12% PF, professional tax and income tax off that, and monthly in-hand under the new regime typically lands somewhere in the region of โน68,000 to โน75,000 depending entirely on how the structure splits basic and allowances.
The new regime does most of the work at this income. With the standard deduction and the section 87A rebate, the effective tax rate on 10 LPA is far lower than the slab table suggests, and for most people at this level without a metro rent claim or a home loan it beats the old regime without any investment decisions at all. Run both against your own deductions rather than assuming.
Which cities it stretches to
In Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai or Ahmedabad, 10 LPA is a genuinely comfortable single income. A decent one-bedroom runs a fraction of take-home, leaving real room for saving, and the commute costs are modest. This is the salary band where tier-2 cities pull decisively ahead on quality of life.
In Mumbai it is workable rather than comfortable, and sharing is the norm rather than the exception โ central rents alone can absorb close to half of take-home. Bangalore and Delhi sit between the two: liveable alone, tighter than the tier-2 cities, and heavily dependent on how far from the office you are willing to live. As always the number that matters is what remains after rent, not the LPA on the offer letter.
Getting from 10 to 15
The jump from 10 to 15 LPA is the most common next step and, in India's market, has historically come faster from changing employer than from internal progression. Switch increments have consistently outpaced appraisal cycles, which is not advice to leave but is a reason to know your market rate before your next review rather than after it.
The alternative route is specialisation into an area where supply is thin โ distributed systems, machine learning infrastructure, security, or a domain where regulatory knowledge takes years to acquire. That path is slower to start and tends to hold its premium longer, because the scarcity is structural rather than cyclical.
What 10 LPA covers, and what it quietly does not
The gap people underestimate at this level is between comfortable and secure. 10 LPA covers rent, living costs and a decent savings rate in most Indian cities, and it does not by itself cover the two things that turn a good month into a bad decade: an emergency fund deep enough to survive a job loss in a slow hiring market, and health cover for parents who are not on your employer's policy.
Employer group health insurance in India typically covers you, a spouse and children, and frequently excludes parents or covers them at a sum insured that a single hospitalisation would exhaust. A separate policy for parents bought in your thirties costs a fraction of what the same policy costs bought in your fifties, and the premium is deductible under section 80D if you are on the old regime. On 10 LPA that is one of the few purchases that is genuinely urgent rather than merely sensible.

Frequently Asked Questions
+What is the in-hand salary for 10 LPA?
Typically around โน68,000 to โน75,000 a month under the new regime, though the exact figure depends heavily on how the structure splits basic pay and allowances. The employer's PF contribution and the gratuity accrual sit inside the 10 LPA CTC figure but never reach your bank account.
+Is 10 LPA a good salary for a fresher in India?
It is well above a typical entry-level package and generally comes from product companies, global capability centres or premier-institute placements. Check the fixed-versus-variable split before accepting, since a large variable component means the guaranteed monthly figure is lower than the headline suggests.
+Is 10 LPA enough to live alone in Bangalore?
Yes, comfortably enough for a one-bedroom in most of the city with room left to save, though not in the most central areas without it becoming tight. Note that Bangalore is not classed as an HRA metro despite its salary levels, so the rent exemption caps at 40% of basic rather than 50%.
+How much should I be saving on 10 LPA?
There is no universal number, but the useful framing is months rather than percentages: aim first for six months of essential expenses in something liquid, then worry about optimisation. On this salary in a tier-2 city that is achievable within a year or two; in Mumbai it takes longer because the rent floor is higher, which is itself an argument for the cheaper city while you are building the buffer.
