How your US take-home pay is calculated

Your US take-home pay depends on three things stacked together: federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare). The federal part is progressive โ€” you only pay each rate on the income that falls inside its bracket โ€” and starts after the standard deduction is subtracted from your gross pay.

The bigger variable is where you live. Nine states levy no income tax on wages at all, while California's top rate exceeds 13%. That single difference can swing your monthly take-home by hundreds of dollars on the same salary, which is exactly why our state pages exist.

First, your standard deduction is subtracted from your gross salary to get taxable income. For 2026 that deduction is $16,100 for a single filer and $32,200 for a married couple filing jointly. Federal income tax is then applied bracket by bracket, from 10% up to 37%, so only the slice of income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Next come FICA taxes. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to an annual cap ($184,500 in 2026); above that, no more Social Security is withheld. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, with an extra 0.9% on earnings above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Finally, state income tax is layered on. Some states use a single flat rate, some are progressive like the federal system, and a handful charge nothing on wages. Our calculator applies your selected state's rules; for no-tax states the state line simply reads zero.

Because these run in parallel, your effective rate โ€” total tax divided by gross โ€” is always lower than your top marginal bracket. A pay rise is taxed at your marginal rate, but your overall take-home percentage moves much more gently.

United States take-home pay by state

Across United States's states, tax and cost of living can vary โ€” pick yours for a take-home figure tuned to local rules:

Where a $60,000 salary goes the United States

On $60,000 the United States, the largest single line is federal income tax at $5,020 a year โ€” 8.4% of gross, and 44% of the $11,403 that leaves your pay across all 4 lines.

All $11,403 of that is genuinely gone โ€” United States has no mandatory savings component inside payroll, so the 19.0% deducted from $60,000 is the whole story.

Every line deducted from a $60,000 gross salary in California under 2026 rules โ€” an estimate for a single earner with the calculator's United States defaults.

What different jobs pay the United States

Of the 8 roles benchmarked the United States, doctor (physician) sits highest at a median of $230,000 โ€” 3.8ร— the $60,000 national median, and $12,730 a month after tax. Backend Developer closes the list at $115,000, or $6,927 a month.

Treat the gap between $230,000 and $115,000 as the middle of two wide ranges rather than a going rate for either: seniority, sector and city move United States salaries enough that a single role's own range often spans more than the $115,000 separating these two.

How the rate changes as your salary rises

Between $30,000 and $300,000 the United States, the effective rate climbs 22.6 points โ€” 13.6% to 36.2% โ€” gradually, because it averages every band beneath you rather than switching at a threshold.

The marginal column is where the steps show: it jumps 13 points around $90,000, a US band boundary. Crossing it re-rates only the pay above $90,000, never the income beneath, which is why take-home still rises from $4,050 to $5,656 a month through it.

Effective rate = everything deducted as a share of gross; marginal rate = the share taken from the next unit of USD. California, 2026 rules. Estimates.

What you need to earn to take home a given amount

Job adverts the United States quote annual gross while budgets are built on monthly take-home, and progressivity means you cannot convert between them by dividing. Clearing $2,000 a month here needs about $27,586 gross โ€” 1.15ร— the naive annual figure โ€” while $12,000 needs $214,889, or 1.49ร—.

That climb from 1.15ร— to 1.49ร— is the point of the table: each step costs proportionally more gross than the last, because the extra is taxed at the US marginal rate while the target is measured after tax. It also turns "I need another $2,000 a month" into the $31,611 of extra United States gross you can actually put in front of an employer.

What that take-home buys, city by city

Take-home on $60,000 is $4,050 a month everywhere the United States, but rent is not: New York City runs $3,800 for a one-bedroom city-centre flat against $1,700 in Austin, a factor of 2.2 across 5 cities.

So the same $60,000 leaves $2,350 a month after rent in Austin and $250 in New York City โ€” a $2,100 gap no US tax band comes close to. One of the most expensive US cities, driven almost entirely by housing.

Freelancers & the self-employed the United States

Self-employment the United States is a structurally different calculation, not the same one with different paperwork: you carry contributions an employer would otherwise share, and you deduct business expenses an employee cannot. On the same $60,000, our estimate leaves a freelancer about $4,239 a year behind an employee before any expenses are deducted.

Is this a good salary in the United States?

Whether a US salary is 'good' depends heavily on the state and city. $80,000 goes a long way in Austin or Houston (no state income tax, moderate rents) but feels tight in San Francisco or New York once rent and state tax are paid. Compare the take-home, then weigh it against local cost of living.

Frequently Asked Questions

+How much is $60,000 after tax in the US?

On $60,000 (single, 2026) you pay roughly $5,000 federal income tax plus about $4,590 in Social Security and Medicare, then state tax depending on where you live. In a no-income-tax state that leaves around $50,000 a year; in California, closer to $48,000.

+Which US states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming levy no tax on wage income, and New Hampshire taxes no earned income. Living in one can noticeably raise your take-home on the same salary.

+What is FICA on my paycheck?

FICA is the combination of Social Security (6.2% up to the annual wage cap) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% on high earnings). Your employer matches most of it. It funds federal retirement and health programs and is separate from income tax.

+Does a higher tax bracket mean I take home less?

No. US brackets are marginal โ€” only the income inside a higher bracket is taxed at that rate. Earning more never reduces your overall take-home; it just means the top slice is taxed more heavily than the rest.

+How is take-home different by filing status?

Married filing jointly has wider brackets and a larger standard deduction than single filers, so a couple often pays less combined tax than two single filers on the same total. Head of household sits between the two.

+Are bonuses taxed more in the US?

No โ€” bonuses are ordinary income by year-end. Employers often withhold them at a flat 22% supplemental rate, which can be more or less than your actual rate, so any over-withholding comes back as a refund.
