What each country keeps, at its own median salary
Headline tax rates are a poor guide, because countries split the burden between income tax and social contributions in very different proportions. Comparing the total deducted at each country’s own median salary puts them on the same footing.

How to use this directory
Start at the country level. Each country page is the full guide — how the system is structured, where the bands sit, what the contributions buy — and every region, salary amount and job page beneath it inherits those rules rather than restating them.
Go to a region page when the state, canton or nation you live in genuinely changes the answer, which it does in the US, Switzerland, Canada, India and the UK far more than elsewhere. Go to a salary-amount page when you want the breakdown for one specific figure, and to a country comparison when you are weighing a move.

Frequently Asked Questions
+Which country on this site takes the least tax?
On each country's own median salary, United Arab Emirates deducts the smallest share — 0.0% of gross — and Germany the largest, at 33.0%. That is a comparison of tax systems at a like-for-like income, not a ranking of which country is better to live in: contributions in the higher-deducting countries usually buy healthcare and pensions that are paid for privately elsewhere.
+Why are there separate pages for states, cantons and Bundesländer?
Because the rules differ. A US state can charge anything from zero to double-digit income tax, Swiss cantons multiply the federal figure by their own coefficient, and Scottish bands diverge from the rest of the UK. There are 163 region pages across the 14 countries, each applying its own rules to the salary you enter.
+Do I need to pick a region?
Only where it changes the answer. Each country calculator pre-selects a default region and the page tells you when the regional rules genuinely alter take-home. In countries where they do not, the region selector is there for completeness rather than because it moves the number.
