How your Spanish take-home pay is calculated
Spanish take-home pay is set by IRPF — a progressive income tax with both a national and a regional component — plus a capped employee social-security contribution. Because each autonomous community sets its own regional scale, the same salary can yield slightly different take-home in Madrid versus Catalonia or Valencia.
Social security is relatively light for employees (around 6.45%) and capped, so high earners pay no more than a few thousand euros regardless of salary. Incoming expats may qualify for the 'Beckham law' flat-rate regime, which isn't modelled here.
IRPF combines a state scale and a regional scale; together they run from about 19% to 47% across the bands. Our calculator uses a representative combined scale — Madrid is a little lower, Valencia and Catalonia a little higher (verify regional figures before relying on them).
Employee social security is roughly 6.45% of gross salary, but it's capped at an annual ceiling (around €61,200), so contributions don't keep rising for high earners. A personal and family minimum reduces the tax due, acting like an allowance.
Spain's combination of moderate take-home and low living costs in many regions makes it a popular destination, though Madrid and Barcelona housing has risen sharply.

Freelancers & the self-employed
Spanish autónomos pay IRPF on profit plus a monthly social-security quota that has moved to an income-based scale, and can deduct business expenses. It's a distinct, often complex regime — use the freelancer calculator.

Is this a good salary in Spain?
A salary around €30,000 is close to the Spanish average; €40,000+ is a strong professional income. Living costs are low outside Madrid and Barcelona, so even a moderate salary can go a long way in much of the country.

Spain vs US take-home →Frequently Asked Questions
+How much is €30,000 after tax in Spain?
On €30,000, after IRPF and roughly 6.45% social security, take-home is around €24,000 a year — about €2,000 a month across 12 payments (Spanish salaries are often quoted over 14). Your region changes this slightly.
+Which region in Spain has the lowest tax?
Madrid generally applies the lowest regional IRPF, so take-home there is a little higher than in Catalonia or the Valencian Community, which sit at the higher end. The state portion of IRPF is the same everywhere.
+What is the Beckham law?
It's a special regime letting qualifying incoming workers be taxed at a flat 24% on Spanish employment income (up to a limit) for several years instead of the progressive scale. It can substantially raise take-home for high earners.
+Is Spanish social security high?
For employees it's relatively low — around 6.45% — and capped at an annual ceiling, so high earners pay a smaller share. Employers, however, pay a much larger social-security contribution on top.
